Hear ye, hear ye!
The Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council, in conjunction with the Village of Port Jefferson, proudly announce that the Charles Dickens Festival will be taking place on each year on the first full weekend of December.
The festival transforms our lovely Village back to the era in which Charles Dickens lived. As in Dickens’ time, there are characters from all social strata, and the public is encouraged to join in by wearing ‘rags to riches’. All of the events range from free admission to very affordably priced so that everyone – from the very young to the young at heart – can join in the fun.
The festivities feature many returning favorites: ice skating at the Village Center, a capella performances by choirs and harmony groups, a live-action Radio Show, and many fine musical performances by area musicians.
In addition, each festival features Theater Three’s Annual production of A Christmas Carol.
As in past years, East Main Street becomes Dickens Alley. In the spirit of Mr. Dickens, area charities, including food banks and animal shelters, are represented by decorated trees, with collection sites for donations of new unwrapped toys and treats for people and pets in need.
A highlight of the festival is Mr. Fezziwig’s Dance Party, featuring live music on traditional instruments led by a dance caller, who is expert in contra dancing, the waltz and the polka. Ball attendees are able to participate in dances which were all the rage in the mid-nineteenth century, whether they are avid dancers or novice hoofers, with no partner needed.
Trolleys roll sedately through the town, while our beloved horses, with their manes and tails twined in holiday holly, pull carriages filled with reveling visitors, jingling merrily down our streets,
All in all, a most splendid time is in store for everyone!
